What Day is the Sabbath? Is it Sunday Or Saturday?
By Mark T Wells
Mention the Sabbath day to many Christians and they will want to bite your head off! Or they will just look at you as if you are weird. Especially if you tell them that you believe the true Sabbath day to be on Saturday, which is what I'm going to do in this short article.
Many Christians will tell you that the disciples changed the Sabbath from the seventh day to the first. But if you look right through the New Testament, you will not find one single verse that confirms this belief. They will also tell you that the Sabbath day was only a shadow that Jesus fulfilled and put an end to at the cross. In this article, I will show you why this is wrong.
If you are a Christian, you must base your belief on the Bible and the Bible alone. This is the very Word of God, and we have to base all of our belief's on His Word. Now we all know that the Bible says God created the heaven and earth in six days and then He created another day, the seventh day and rested on it. Not only that, but He blessed the seventh day and sanctified it. That means He set it apart from the other six days for Holy use. Many Christians say that God did not end that day with saying 'morning and evening, the seventh day', and therefore they say that it was open ended, and the Sabbath continued on all days thereafter. But, what came after the seventh day? The first day. So God started the weekly cycle we have now, and He even called the seventh day 'A DAY', so to say it was open ended is not true. The seventh day was followed by the first day.
Now have a good think about this; the Sabbath day was created and instituted BEFORE sin entered the world. So what does that tell us? It tells us that it was part of God's eternal plan for this world, and it's impossible for it to be a shadow of anything, because a shadow could only come AFTER sin entered the world. Also, the Sabbath was created and instituted BEFORE there were any Jews. So to say that the Sabbath was just for the Jews is not true.
If the Sabbath day was done away with by Jesus, then why was it included in the Ten Commandments on the stone tablets and put inside the ark? If it was to be done away with, surely it would have just been included with the laws of Moses written in the book and placed beside the ark in a pocket, like the rest of the ceremonial laws. But no, God included it in with the Ten Commandments on the stone tablets, because it would continue forever. It even says in Isaiah 66 that the Sabbath day would be observed on the NEW EARTH, after Jesus returns and the wicked have gone.
If the Sabbath was done away with by Jesus on the cross, then why did the people who followed Jesus KEEP the Seventh Day Sabbath after His crucifixion? And why is the Sabbath still called the Sabbath day all throughout the New Testament, and the first day is called just that, 'the first day'?
This issue is all about who we worship. Do we worship and obey God who gave us the Seventh Day Sabbath (Saturday) to rest with Him, or do we worship and obey man who changed the Sabbath day to the first day (Sunday)? I would much rather follow and obey God than man, because only God can save me. Have a think about this also; The Bible confirms that it was Jesus who created the heaven and earth, so it was Jesus who created and instituted the Sabbath Day. So Jesus created the Seventh day Sabbath, He kept the Seventh day Sabbath, and He never abolished the Seventh day Sabbath. Should we not follow His example?
